The Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are locked in a standoff along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Nadia district over a group of 12 people whose nationality remains disputed. Border dispute triggers fresh tension Tensions have escalated at the Raninagar border under Hoglaberia police station, where the BGB has allegedly attempted to push 12 individuals into Indian territory. While the BGB claims the group consists of Indian citizens who must be accepted back by India, the BSF has rejected the assertion, maintaining that they are Bangladeshi infiltrators attempting to enter India illegally. 12 people stuck at border Against this backdrop, flag meetings were held between the BSF and BGB on both Friday and Saturday. However, no breakthrough was achieved. According to BGB officials and residents of nearby Bangladeshi border villages, the BSF allegedly opened a border gate on Friday morning and pushed the group towards Bangladesh. The allegation has been denied by the Indian force. BGB claims group is Indian The 12 individuals, comprising four women, four children and four men, reportedly remained near the zero point along the Mathabhanga River close to pillar 148/3-S between India’s Raninagar and Bangladesh’s Pragpur border areas. They were later provided food and temporary shelter in a nearby border village. During the second round of talks on Saturday, the BGB reiterated its claim that the group are Indian nationals and demanded that the BSF allow them to re-enter India. The Bangladeshi force also accused the BSF of carrying out a “push-in” operation. The BSF firmly rejected the allegation, instead accusing the BGB of attempting to facilitate illegal infiltration into India. Flag meetings fail to resolve The meeting ended without a resolution. The BSF maintained that no individual had been pushed into Bangladesh through the Raninagar border in recent days and therefore there was no question of taking anyone back. However, officials said the BGB’s claims would be forwarded to higher authorities and further action would be taken based on official instructions.
