Flood alert in North Bengal as IMD issues warning:Moderate rainfall expected across South Bengal over the coming few days

Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall continued to batter several districts of North Bengal on Sunday, severely disrupting normal life and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts across the region. Meanwhile, South Bengal is expected to witness only light to moderate rainfall in isolated places, with hot and humid conditions likely to persist. Red alert issued across northern districts The IMD has issued a red alert for Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar. At the same time, parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong are also under the highest warning due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert remains in place for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, with continuous rain already affecting the Himalayan districts since Sunday morning. Landslide threat looms over hill regions Weather officials have forecast 7 to 20 cm of rainfall in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar on Sunday and Monday. Isolated places may receive more than 20 cm of rain, raising fears of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging. A landslide warning has also been issued for the hill districts, while North Dinajpur remains under a yellow alert. South Bengal awaits scattered rainfall relief In contrast, South Bengal, including Kolkata, began Sunday with bright sunshine and uncomfortable humidity. Although isolated light to moderate showers are expected in some areas, there is little chance of widespread heavy rainfall over the next few days. The IMD has advised residents in North Bengal to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas, and follow instructions issued by local authorities as the heavy rain spell continues.
