Bombay HC asks if FDA officials think they are ‘God’:Court says, ‘They don’t read rules or know law’; 5 restaurants get licences back

The Bombay High Court on Saturday questioned the working of Maharashtra’s Food Department. The court said, “The officials neither understand our orders nor the Act. They do not even read their own rules. They do not know the law and simply take action.” The matter came up after the Mumbai Cricket Association filed a petition against the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA). On August 21, the FDA had suspended the licences of five outlets run by the association following an initial investigation. A division bench of the High Court allowed all five restaurants to reopen based on a fresh report. The report found that the restaurants were now complying with 88% of food safety standards.
