TMC MP Mahua Moitra has filed a complaint against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the Parliament Street police station in Delhi, alleging irregularities in the electoral-roll revision process. Moitra has alleged that changes were made to the voter list in violation of rules and that names of eligible voters were removed. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared a copy of the complaint on X and alleged that Kumar acted arbitrarily and without the consent of the other two Election Commissioners. She referred to him as “Gyanesh Chor Kumar” in the post. Mahua alleges irregularities in voter-list system The complaint alleges that state-level election officials were not given full access to the electoral rolls. Moitra has also alleged that appeals were filed against the inclusion of voters whose names had been ordered to be added to the electoral rolls by courts. Other allegations in the complaint include letters or messages being issued in the name of the Election Commission without its approval and informal instructions being given to retain the names of VIPs and prominent individuals on voter lists. Moitra further argued that denying genuine voters their right to vote cannot be treated as part of an official duty. She said those responsible should not be granted any exemption and should face prosecution. Complaint comes amid reported EC differences The complaint comes amid reports of objections raised within the Election Commission over changes to the ECINET digital system, electoral rolls and Form 6. According to a report by The Indian Express, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on record on several occasions over SIR-related decisions and orders. The Election Commission has said that differences in views, suggestions and observations are normal in a multi-member constitutional body. It has also maintained that its final decisions, including those related to SIR, were taken unanimously. Opposition plans fresh removal motion The Opposition is also preparing to submit a fresh notice in Parliament seeking Kumar’s removal. Opposition sources said the notice is being drafted with the help of legal experts and will be submitted in both Houses. A previous notice submitted in April was rejected in the Lok Sabha, while the corresponding notice remains pending in the Rajya Sabha.
