West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari campaigned for the BJP candidate in Nandigram on Friday. He said the TMC’s name and symbol had been erased from the state. Adhikari said the Election Commission had allotted separate names and election symbols to the factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Arup Roy. Without naming anyone, he said, “The main thief will also go to jail.” Adhikari was campaigning for BJP’s Nandigram bypoll candidate Hasirani Rath. He appealed to people to vote in the bypoll and ensure that all rival candidates lost their deposits. The Nandigram bypoll will be held in Purba Medinipur district. A bypoll will also be held in the Rejinagar seat in Murshidabad district. Voting for both seats will take place on 6 October. BJP has won Nandigram twice in a row Nandigram has long been a major centre of political conflict between the TMC and BJP. The 2007 anti-land acquisition movement in the area played a major role in helping Mamata Banerjee and the TMC come to power in 2011. In 2021, Mamata Banerjee contested the Bengal Assembly election from Nandigram against the current Bengal CM, Suvendu Adhikari, but lost. In the 2026 Assembly election, Suvendu Adhikari contested from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur and won both seats. Adhikari later retained the Bhabanipur seat and resigned from Nandigram.
