The Supreme Court is currently dealing with a complex and emotional legal battle over the estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur. The case involves Sunjay’s 80-year-old mother, Rani Kapur, and his former wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, along with other family members. The situation is so intense that Justice JB Pardiwala compared it to the epic Mahabharata, suggesting the dispute is vast and deeply rooted. ‘I was tricked into signing documents’: Rani Kapur At the heart of the matter is a family trust called the “RK Family Trust,” which controls a significant portion of the Kapur family’s wealth. Rani Kapur claims she was tricked into signing documents that made Priya Sachdev Kapur and others the sole beneficiaries of the trust, effectively cutting her and the rest of the Kapur family out of their inheritance. She alleges that this was done through fraudulent means. Rani Kapur filed a new plea with the SC Rani Kapur has filed a new plea with the Supreme Court to stop Priya Sachdev Kapur and others from interfering with the trust’s operations while the court-ordered mediation is ongoing. She is particularly concerned about a proposed board meeting of Raghuvanshi Investment Private Limited (RIPL), a company that holds a large part of the disputed estate. Rani Kapur’s allegations against Priya Sachdev Rani Kapur believes this meeting is an attempt by Priya Sachdev Kapur to seize control of the family’s financial empire and undermine the mediation process. She claims the meeting aims to appoint new directors to the board, giving Priya Sachdev Kapur and her allies more power over the company’s finances and assets. Rani Kapur argues that this move would render the Supreme Court’s mediation efforts pointless. She claims she was wrongly deprived of her “legacy, estate, and home” through fraudulent documents related to the RK Family Trust. While the Trust Deed identifies her as the Settlor and Trustee, it names Priya Sachdev Kapur and others as the sole beneficiaries, excluding her and the rest of the Kapur family. She asserts that she has a strong case because the respondents are attempting to take control of the family estate and RIPL through a hastily arranged and improper board meeting. Rani Kapur also claims that even if the Trust is valid, she is currently the sole trustee after removing Priya Sachdev Kapur through a letter dated March 21, 2026, allegedly under powers granted by the Trust Deed. The timing of the board meeting notice, issued shortly after the Supreme Court ordered mediation, raises suspicions about its motives. The Supreme Court had previously encouraged all parties to participate in mediation with an open mind and avoid public discussions about the case, emphasizing that it is a family dispute that should be resolved within the family. The legal battle began when Rani Kapur challenged the validity of the RK Family Trust, claiming she was the rightful beneficiary of her late husband Surinder Kapur’s estate. She alleges that a “systematic fraud” was carried out with the help of her late son to transfer assets into the trust without her consent. Sunjay Kapur died last year in June Sunjay Kapur’s death in June of last year has further complicated the situation. In addition to this case, Sunjay Kapur’s children from his marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor have also challenged the authenticity of his will in the Delhi High Court. The Supreme Court has acknowledged that prolonged litigation at Rani Kapur’s age would be unproductive and has urged all parties to seek an amicable resolution. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 14.
