An FIR has been registered against Abhishek Banerjee at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station over alleged provocative remarks and threats made during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign. Complaint filed over controversial campaign remarks The complaint was filed by Rajib Sarkar, a resident of Baguiati, a day after the election results were announced on May 5. In his complaint, Sarkar alleged that Abhishek made inflammatory speeches at multiple campaign rallies and threatened Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Links to several speeches were also submitted to the police. Police invoke multiple non bailable legal sections One of the speeches under scrutiny was delivered on April 27, where Abhishek challenged the BJP, saying, “I will see who comes to save them after midnight on June 4. We will also see how much power these executioners have and which godfather from Delhi comes to rescue them.” Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR under multiple sections, including BNS Sections 192, 196, 351(2), and 353(1)(c), along with Sections 123(2) and 125 of the Representation of the People Act. The charges include provoking unrest, promoting enmity between groups, criminal intimidation, and spreading misleading statements during election campaigning. Abhishek reacts after post-poll violence allegations Meanwhile, amid allegations of post-poll violence following the change of power in the state, Abhishek broke his silence on Thursday through a Facebook video message. Questioning the attacks on TMC workers, he said, “Why this violence, loot, and vandalism? BJP knows the strength of Bengal’s people. Those who attack in darkness are afraid to face your courage.” Calling the current situation an “Agnipariksha” for Trinamool workers, he urged party supporters to stay strong and emerge more united through the crisis.
