Amid rising incidents of attacks on Indians living abroad, another tragic case involving a young Gujarati woman has come to light. A 22-year-old woman from Borsad in Gujarat was stabbed to death in Canada, leaving her family in shock. The deceased named Vidhi Megha, had been living in the Niagara region of Canada for the last four years. She was pursuing law while also working part-time. According to her family, she was preparing to apply for permanent residency (PR) in Canada. Attack took place on May 15 According to available information, Vidhi had stepped out of her residence on May 15 when she was allegedly attacked in broad daylight. The assailant reportedly stabbed her during what is suspected to be a robbery attempt linked to money. The attack left her critically injured. Locals rushed her to hospital, but doctors later declared her dead. One accused arrested, probe underway Following the incident, local police registered a murder case and launched an investigation. Authorities have confirmed that one suspect has been arrested and is currently being questioned. However, officials have not yet disclosed the exact motive behind the killing. Family says she had recently shifted house Vidhi had moved to Canada four years ago with dreams of building a better future. Alongside her studies, she worked part-time to support herself financially. According to her family she had shifted from Hamilton to St Catharines just 15 days before the incident. On May 14, a day before the attack, she had spoken happily to her father over the phone about applying for her PR process. The family said, “We regularly spoke to her every 10 days through calls and exchanged messages daily. However, after May 15, the messages sent to her were never delivered, which initially raised concern”. Family devastated after receiving news Vidhi’s entire family lives in Borsad, where grief has engulfed the household after news of her death emerged. Her mother has reportedly been inconsolable since learning about the incident. Family members said she repeatedly breaks down, saying they raised their daughter with immense love but are now unable even to see her one last time. Relatives have appealed to the government to ensure that Vidhi’s body is brought back to India at the earliest so the family can perform her final rites. ‘We spoke on May 14, attack happened the next day’ – Kalpeshbhai In this regard, Vidhi’s father Kalpeshbhai said, “I received information about the incident from the police about the matter. The last time I spoke to my daughter was on May 14. She told me that she was now eligible to apply for a work permit and would soon start the process”. He added, “I told her that it was very good news. Her studies had been completed and she was preparing to move ahead with her future plans. The incident happened the very next day.” He further said, “I later learnt she had been attacked suddenly during an attempted robbery. She tried to defend herself but could not survive”. Family demands protection for Indians abroad Vidhi’s father claimed, “The accused was allegedly a drug addict and had previously been linked to another murder case and is currently in police custody”. The grieving family has urged the Indian government to ensure better protection for Indians, especially Gujarati students and women living abroad. He said, “Attacks on Indian citizens overseas are becoming increasingly frequent and stronger safety mechanisms are needed”. Minister Raman Solanki meets grieving family After learning about the incident, Gujarat Cabinet Minister and Borsad MLA Raman Solanki visited the family residence to offer condolences. The minister described Vidhi as a bright and much-loved daughter whose death had deeply saddened everyone. He stated, “I have immediately informed the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), after which official procedures to bring the body back to India is being initiated. Since the matter involved a foreign country, the process is more complex, but efforts are being made to expedite it”. Growing concern over attacks on Indians abroad Vidhi’s death has once again highlighted growing concerns over attacks on Indians living overseas. People in the locality have too stated that it was heartbreaking that a young woman who had gone abroad for education and a better future lost her life in such a tragic manner. This is not the first such case in Canada involving Indian-origin students. In December last year, the body of 30-year-old Indian-origin woman Himanshi Khurana was found in Toronto. Earlier, in April 2025, 21-year-old Punjabi-origin student Harsimrat Randhawa was shot dead in Ontario. Canadian police had later arrested a 32-year-old suspect in that case.
