A theft has been reported involving filmmaker and stylist Rhea Kapoor, the sister of Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor. Diamond-studded earrings worth ₹1.35 crore, which were rented for a high-profile fashion event in New York, have been stolen. The expensive jewellery was reportedly taken from the handbag of Rhea’s long-time makeup artist, Savleen Singh. The Mumbai Police have registered a case against an unknown person and are currently investigating the matter. Rhea Kapoor was invited to attend the prestigious Met Gala fashion event in New York on 29 April. For this special occasion, her team rented two pairs of highly valuable earrings from prominent Mumbai-based jewellers. The first pair, valued at ₹66 lakh, consisted of emerald-stone diamond gold earrings from Mehta Jewellers. The second pair, worth ₹69 lakh, was a set of Zambian emerald-stone gold-bordered earrings from Goenka Jewellers. Savleen Singh, who has worked with Rhea for seven years, was responsible for carrying both jewellery boxes in her handbag. According to the reports, the travel timeline shows that Rhea’s team began their journey on 27 April. They boarded an Emirates flight from Mumbai to Dubai, and then took a connecting flight to New York. They landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport on the evening of 28 April and checked into the luxurious Pierre Hotel. The theft was discovered when Savleen opened the jewellery boxes in her hotel room to hand the earrings over to another team member, Shireen. To her shock, both boxes were empty. Upon returning to Mumbai, Savleen Singh filed an official complaint at the Sahar Police Station. Following her complaint, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with theft. Investigators are now carefully reviewing the entire timeline of the trip. They are trying to determine exactly where the crime took place, whether the earrings were stolen at the Mumbai airport, during the international flight, or after the team arrived at their hotel in New York.
