The dispute over the approximately ₹30,000 crore worth of property belonging to late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor, former husband of actress Karisma Kapoor, is in the Supreme Court. On Monday, while hearing the case, the Court advised Sanjay’s 80-year-old mother, Rani Kapoor, to resolve the matter through mutual discussion (mediation) instead of a long legal battle. Justice J.B. Pardiwala’s bench commented, “This lawsuit has started at the age of 80… this is not the age to fight.” Court Said – Legal Battle Will Be Long
Hearing Rani Kapoor’s petition, the Supreme Court stated that since this case involves many parties and a large estate, this legal battle could drag on for a very long time. The bench suggested that it would be better for all parties to find a peaceful solution through mediation. However, the Court also clarified that they would hear the case on its merits, but would give first priority to mutual settlement. The next hearing in this matter will be next week. Industrialist Sanjay Kapur was born to Rani Kapur and the late Surinder Kapur, a pioneer of India’s auto parts industry and founder of the Sona Group. Sanjay Kapur studied at The Doon School and Cathedral and John Connon School. He later earned a BBA degree in Corporate Strategy and Human Resources from London and went on to complete executive programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Business School. He took over his father’s company, Sona Comstar, and expanded its presence both in India and internationally. Apart from business, he has a strong passion for polo and a deep love for horses. Personal Life Sanjay Kapur has been married three times: First Marriage: He married fashion designer Nandita Mahtani in 1996. The marriage lasted four years, and the couple had no children. Second Marriage: In 2003, he married actress Karisma Kapoor. They have two children, Samaira and Kiaan. The couple filed for divorce by mutual consent in 2014, which was finalised in 2016. Third Marriage: He married Priya Sachdev in 2017. They have a son, Azarias. Sanjay also adopted Safira Chatwal, Priya’s daughter from her previous marriage to Vikram Chatwal. Mother accused daughter-in-law of fraud
Rani Kapoor has challenged the Delhi High Court’s order in the Supreme Court, which denied her interim protection. Rani alleges that she has been dispossessed of her entire inheritance, home, and property. She stated in her petition that after suffering a brain stroke in 2017, her son Sanjay Kapoor and daughter-in-law Priya Kapoor took advantage of her illness. It is alleged that a family trust was created by getting her to sign blank papers, and the property was transferred to the trust without her knowledge. Sanjay Kapoor died in 2025
This entire dispute deepened after Sanjay Kapoor’s death last June. 53-year-old Sanjay Kapoor died of cardiac arrest during a polo match in England. Rani Kapoor says that after her son’s death, his third wife, Priya Kapoor, took control of all the group companies and did not give her any share in the property. Rani Kapoor is now seeking legal protection to secure her property and home. Karisma Kapoor’s children also have a claim
This battle over Sanjay Kapoor’s inheritance is not just between mother and daughter-in-law. It also involves Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor’s children – Samaira and Kiaan. Sanjay and Karisma’s children have challenged Sanjay’s will, in which a large portion of the property has been named after Priya Kapoor and her children. The children allege that this will might be fake and that other close relatives of the family have been deliberately excluded from it.
