Earlier, the same issue had impacted Apple’s Mac mini and Mac Studio, but it has now reached the company’s most popular laptop. Several MacBook Air configurations listed on Apple’s official website are now showing delivery timelines stretching into the second half of August and, in some cases, even September. Retailers are also finding it difficult to keep popular models in stock. What’s causing the memory chip shortage? The main reason behind the shortage is the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. Modern AI systems require powerful servers equipped with large amounts of advanced memory chips to train and run AI models. As companies around the world continue investing billions of dollars in AI infrastructure, demand for these chips has surged. Chip manufacturers are prioritising supplies for AI data centres, leaving fewer memory chips available for consumer electronics such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. Last month, the company raised the price of the 13-inch MacBook Air by up to Rs 30,000, while the 15-inch MacBook Air became up to Rs 35,000 more expensive. Industry reports suggest the higher cost of memory chips played a major role in these price hikes. How Apple is responding According to the Bloomberg report, Apple is exploring multiple ways to deal with the shortage. The company is reportedly looking at sourcing memory chips from Chinese suppliers to reduce supply pressure. It has also delayed its annual Back-to-School promotion this year and shifted much of its marketing focus toward the base MacBook Pro instead of the MacBook Air. Some promotional material even includes the note “MacBook Air subject to availability,” indicating that supplies remain limited.
