US envoy says other countries envy India-US ties:PM Modi tops list of leaders Trump wants to meet

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has made a major statement on India-US relations. He said several other countries are “jealous” of the strengthening ties between the two countries. Gor said US President Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a friend and that Modi would be at the top of the list of leaders Trump wants to meet during the G20 Summit in December. Separate Modi-Trump meeting possible at G20 In an interview with India Today TV, Sergio Gor said Trump and Modi share a good personal relationship. He said the two leaders could also have a separate meeting when Modi travels to Florida for the G20 Summit in December. However, no official announcement has been made yet about a separate bilateral meeting between Modi and Trump. Gor also hinted at the possibility of Trump visiting India in 2027. He said Trump still remembers his visit to India in 2020. According to the US Ambassador, whenever Trump talks about India, he remembers meeting people here and his relationship with Prime Minister Modi. Gor said next year is not far away. However, he did not give any date or official schedule for Trump’s visit to India. On trade deal, says ‘quite close’ to agreement On the proposed trade deal between India and the US, Gor said the two countries are quite close to reaching an agreement. Work on issues related to the deal is being reviewed again following a US Supreme Court ruling. He hopes the two countries can finalise the agreement in the next few months. Gor said it is normal for such a major trade agreement to take time. Citing the long-running trade talks between the US and the European Union, he said major trade agreements can take several years to complete. $240 billion trade, $500 billion target According to Gor, trade between India and the US currently stands at around $240 billion. The two countries aim to increase this to $500 billion in the coming years. He said the trade deal could bring economic benefits to both countries. The US wants to work with a strong and stable India. Gor’s comments show that trade is not the only important part of India-US relations; friendship and the strategic partnership between the two countries are also significant.
