Putin to visit India for BRICS Summit:To hold bilateral meeting with PM Modi on 11 September; second visit in 9 months

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India to attend the BRICS Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Putin will hold a bilateral meeting ahead of the BRICS leaders’ meeting in New Delhi on 11 September. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has confirmed the meeting. He said Russia considers India a strategic partner and that relations between the two countries are extremely important to Moscow. He said most payments between India and Russia are now being made in their respective currencies. Putin had earlier visited India on 4 December, 2025. Trade to Ukraine war: These issues will be discussed The Modi-Putin meeting will cover trade, economic cooperation and transport-related issues. The two countries may also discuss ways to increase bilateral trade and explore new opportunities for their companies. Indian companies want to expand in the Russian market, while Russia is interested in increasing the reach of its businesses and products in India. The Russia-Ukraine war and the ongoing tensions in the Persian Gulf may also be part of the discussions. The two leaders could discuss the current situation in the war and its impact. According to Russia, developments in the Gulf are affecting the global economy. Selling Su-57 fighter jets to India on Russia’s agenda Russia is preparing to sell its Su-57 fighter jet to India. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the sale of the Su-57 to India is on Russia’s agenda. The Su-57 is Russia’s fifth-generation fighter jet. It is built with stealth technology, making it difficult for enemy radar to detect. The aircraft can be equipped with advanced air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. It also features modern radar, sensors and electronic warfare systems. Putin’s second India visit in 9 months This will be Putin’s second visit to India in nine months. He previously visited on December 4, 2025. It was his first visit to India since the Russia-Ukraine war began. When Putin arrived in Delhi, PM Modi welcomed him at the airport. The two leaders then travelled together in the same car to the Prime Minister’s residence, where Modi hosted a private dinner in his honour. Modi also gifted Putin a copy of the Bhagavad Gita written in Russian. The next day, the two leaders held their annual summit, where they discussed defence, energy, trade and economic cooperation. What is BRICS? BRICS is a group of 11 major emerging economies. They are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. The group aims to promote economic, political and social cooperation among these countries. It initially had four members and was called BRIC. The name was coined in 2001 by Jim O’Neill, an economist at Goldman Sachs. India is chairing BRICS in 2026. The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13. BRICS Summit in India after 14 years India is hosting the BRICS Summit after 14 years. The conference was last held in New Delhi in 2012. This time, the BRICS leaders’ meeting will be held in Delhi. In view of the summit, special security and traffic arrangements have been made in the capital. Traffic will be regulated on several major roads during the movement of the leaders. The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory detailing diversions and traffic restrictions on several routes. Alternative routes have also been suggested for people travelling to the airport and railway stations. The police have appealed to people to check traffic updates before travelling and, if necessary, leave with extra time in hand.
