West Bengal government has ordered the closure of 252 madrasas in Kolkata. Around 100 other madrasas have been sent show-cause notices. A survey conducted across the state found that these institutions did not have the required approvals and basic facilities. The action was taken by the Department of Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education. After issuing the order, the government also said on Sunday that madrasas with the required approvals would continue to operate. Further action will be taken against the madrasas that received notices after their responses have been examined. Earlier, in the 2026 Budget, the Bengal government reduced funding for the Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education Department from ₹5,713 crore to ₹2,165.42 crore. Survey conducted in all districts According to officials, the government has conducted a ground survey in all districts of West Bengal since the beginning of June. The survey examined the basic facilities, approval status and management arrangements of government and private madrasas. Officials said the madrasas concerned had been issued show-cause notices. Further action will be taken after their responses are examined. The process was initiated on the instructions of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Its objective was to determine the number of authorised and unauthorised madrasas in different districts. Sing Vande Mataram mandatory in all madrasas in Bengal The West Bengal government has made singing “Vande Mataram” mandatory in all madrasas under the state’s Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education Department. According to an order issued on 19 May, the rule will take immediate effect in government model madrasas, as well as government-aided and unaided madrasas. Previously, the national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, and poet Ghulam Mustafa’s Bengali song ‘Ananta Ashim Premomoy Tumi’ were sung during the morning prayer at madrasas.
