Chief Justice of India Surya Kant administered the oath of office and secrecy on Tuesday to three newly appointed Supreme Court judges — Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Telangana High Court Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh. With their appointment, the Supreme Court’s working strength has increased to 37 judges. The Supreme Court collegium had recommended the elevation of the three Chief Justices on September 28. The Centre notified their appointments on Monday, paving the way for their swearing-in. Justice Sunita Agarwal Justice Sunita Agarwal was earlier a judge of the Allahabad High Court and later served as Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. She will serve on the Supreme Court until April 29, 2031, when she is due to retire. Her tenure in the top court will be around five years. Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay was serving as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court. Originally from the Allahabad High Court, he has also served as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He will retire from the Supreme Court on June 15, 2030. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh was the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court before his elevation. His parent High Court is Jharkhand. He has also served as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. Justice Singh will remain a Supreme Court judge until July 6, 2030, when he is scheduled to retire.
