A massive fire broke out at a transit camp for construction workers in the Mumbai’s Navghar area of Mulund East on Thursday afternoon, triggering panic in the area. Around seven to eight gas cylinders exploded as the fire intensified. No casualties were reported, and all workers were safely evacuated. Large-scale construction is under way in Mulund’s Navghar area as part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. A G+1 transit camp has been built alongside the construction site to accommodate workers employed on the project. The fire broke out in one of the rooms at the camp on Thursday afternoon. According to preliminary information, the blaze was initially limited in scope but became serious after a gas cylinder exploded. Successive cylinder blasts intensify blaze Following the first explosion, the fire quickly spread to other parts of the camp. Around seven to eight more gas cylinders reportedly exploded during the incident. The successive blasts caused loud noises in the area, while the flames spread across the camp, creating panic among the workers. Four fire tenders deployed After noticing the fire, the workers rushed out of their accommodation and alerted the fire brigade. Fire brigade personnel reached the spot and deployed four fire tenders along with the necessary equipment. The intensity of the blaze initially posed a challenge to the firefighters. However, they brought the fire under control after around an hour of efforts. The area was subsequently inspected to ensure there was no remaining fire. Major tragedy averted, investigation underway A major tragedy was averted as all residents of the camp were evacuated safely. Police said no injuries were reported in the incident. However, household goods, clothes and other belongings in the workers’ accommodation were extensively damaged. The authorities have made the necessary arrangements at the site, while an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary information suggests that the explosions occurred after a gas cylinder caught fire, but the exact cause will be established after the investigation.
