Bollywood actor Ranvir Shorey has received death threats after speaking out against the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) street protest. On October 12 at 9:10 pm, he received threatening emails from two different email IDs. The messages warned that he would be attacked on the head with an iron rod in a public place. Shorey shared screenshots of the emails on X and lodged complaints with the cyber police and Mumbai Police. Mumbai Police have taken note of the matter and launched an investigation. Email threatens attack with an iron rod Actor Ranvir Shorey received an email from an address named Raj Parihar. The email used extremely abusive and violent language. The sender wrote that they were monitoring Ranvir’s location and movements and would attack when the right time came. The email threatened to strike him on the head from behind with an iron rod in a public place. Ranvir complained to Mumbai Police After receiving the threatening emails, Ranvir Shorey posted screenshots of them on social media platform X. Tagging Cyber Dost and Maharashtra Cyber, he wrote that he had received threats from these two email accounts and urged them to look into the matter. Shortly afterwards, the official Mumbai Police handle replied to his post and asked him to share his contact details so they could get in touch with him. Ranveer then thanked the Mumbai Police for their prompt response. Ranveer had raised questions over CJP’s street protest The main reason behind the threat is believed to be a post by Ranvir Shorey about the CJP protest. Recently, questioning the CJP’s demonstration against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Ranvir wrote that democratic avenues such as the courts and Parliament should be used to voice protest instead of blocking roads. He described occupying roads and inconveniencing the general public as the “murder of democracy”. He had been targeted on social media ever since the statement. Background to the CJP protest and police action The Cockroach Janta Party had announced a major protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on 10 October, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The agitation was called over allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. However, the Delhi Police and Mumbai Police adopted a tough stance and detained thousands of protesters. Several people, including actor Imran Khan, were detained from Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, after which a political war of words has continued.
