Naseeruddin Shah shared a video on his Instagram Story on 24 October. In it, he targeted the BJP after the West Bengal elections. The actor alleged that after winning the election, the BJP was taking action against people who disagreed with its ideology and policies. He also raised the issue of students at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. In the video, Naseeruddin Shah said the institute’s students had been seeking answers from the administration. Instead, they were served show-cause notices, placed under surveillance, and threatened. He also said the students had been asked to vacate their hostel. The actor accused the BJP of promoting propaganda in its favour and trying to intimidate people who disagree with it or change the way they think. What is the matter? Students of Kolkata’s Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) have been staging a sit-in protest for 25 days. They are protesting the violence on campus, security lapses and the administration’s action. The students have also boycotted classes. The protest began after a clash during an event on 27 September. The students are demanding increased security on campus, action against those responsible for the violence and the withdrawal of notices issued against them. They also want institute director Santosh Ajmera to resign. The students say it is wrong to deny them essential facilities. Meanwhile, the institute issued a notice on 16 October halting classes until 13 November. It also ordered the students to vacate the hostel within 24 hours. The students refused to comply with the order. On the other hand, the administration alleges that some students continued to stay in the hostel even after completing their courses and were preventing junior students from attending classes. The administration also suspended six students on 15 October. They have been accused of violating discipline, including assaulting teachers and security staff. The students’ union has rejected these allegations and said it would take legal action against the administration. Had supported the student movement at Jantar Mantar It is worth noting that Naseeruddin Shah had earlier, in July, supported the student movement led by CJP (Cockroach Janta Party) at Jantar Mantar. In July 2026, a major protest was held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar under the leadership of CJP over the NEET paper leak and alleged irregularities in other competitive examinations. After children were assaulted during the protest, he condemned the government in strong terms. Shah said in a video, Greetings. I am Naseeruddin Shah, and I would like to submit two points to all of you. The first is that if an ignorant person leads this country, he would want the entire country to become as ignorant, foolish, unsuccessful, and heartless as he is. Despite completing two separate acting courses at the National School of Drama and the Pune Film Institute, what I have learnt most about acting is from the children, the students, whom I have tried to teach. Naseeruddin Shah went on to say, My deepest sympathies are with them. I offer them prayers with every breath and salute them on every Teachers’ Day. At this moment, my heart is heavy and I am also boiling with anger. It is heartbreaking to see the way our children are being brutally treated by these goons, who remind me of America’s ICE agents-wearing masks over their faces and carrying sticks in their hands. In the end, Naseeruddin Shah said that people should sometimes think about their own children too, and also remember that they, too, will surely face the consequences of their actions one day. I want to tell all these children not to lose courage. Many people sympathise with you, and many people stand with you. Keep fighting. I have always had hope in the younger generation of our country, and that hope has now become even stronger. Keep fighting your battle; we are all with you. And I want to tell this country’s government just one thing: everything will be remembered.
