Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assembly on May 26. He said the Assam Cabinet has approved the draft of the UCC Bill, and it will be presented on the final day of the current Assembly session. Tribal communities exempted from UCC Himanta Biswa Sarma said the UCC in Assam will mainly deal with marriage, live-in relationships, and compulsory registration of marriages and divorces. He said the law would be largely similar to the UCC models followed in Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Goa. However, tribal communities in Assam will be fully exempted. Their customs, rituals and traditions will remain outside the scope of the law because Assam has many different communities with separate traditions. BJP government pushes ahead with key poll promise The move is part of the BJP-led government’s long-standing promise to implement the Uniform Civil Code. The UCC proposes replacing religion-based personal laws with a common civil law covering marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption for all citizens. Supporters say it would create equal legal rights and responsibilities across communities, although the issue remains politically sensitive in India. Only a few states, including Uttarakhand, have implemented the UCC so far, while states like Gujarat are also moving in that direction. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has earlier said the government would follow its election promises while protecting Assam’s identity and development priorities. The announcement is part of a wider reform push by the newly formed “NDA 3.0” government in the state.
