Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sent legal notices to three hospitals over the alleged disclosure of her medical records from 2021. Mamata has asked how these documents reached West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. She has also asked how the records were subsequently made public. The notices were sent amid a fresh political controversy over the injury she suffered on 5 October during the 2021 Assembly election campaign in Nandigram. The notices question the alleged disclosure of the medical documents. They seek details of the circumstances in which the records were used and shared. The notice was sent to SSKM Hospital director Dr Manimoy Bandyopadhyay. It was also sent to Bangur Institute of Neurosciences medical superintendent and vice-principal Dr Pijush Kumar Roy. In addition, a notice has also been sent to Dr Atanu Biswas, head of the Neurology Department at Bangur Institute. A copy has also been sent to the principal secretary of the state health department. In the notice, Mamata asked whether her consent had been obtained before the medical records were released. She also asked whether there was any court order authorising the release of the documents. The notice also asked how the medical records allegedly reached Suvendu Adhikari. It further sought clarification on whether the documents later made public were the original medical records. Fresh controversy over Nandigram injury The controversy is related to the injury Mamata Banerjee sustained in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly election campaign. After suffering the injury, Mamata campaigned from a wheelchair. At the time, Suvendu Adhikari was a BJP leader. He was also Mamata Banerjee’s electoral rival in Nandigram. On Saturday, Adhikari alleged that Mamata had made false claims about her injury during the election campaign. He announced a fresh investigation into the matter. Adhikari said, “In 2021, the Chief Minister claimed that she had been insulted and that her leg had been fractured. However, the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences report at the time did not mention any fracture.” He said, “The CID is investigating the matter. We will conduct a fresh investigation into the false propaganda. Information about it will be provided after the 9th.” After Mamata’s latest legal notice, the issue of access to her medical records and their publication has once again become a subject of controversy. Meanwhile, Adhikari has announced a fresh investigation into the events surrounding the 2021 injury.
