The Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a programme that allows the company to apply for green cards for workers who come to the US on H-1B visas. US Vice President JD Vance announced the decision at a White House news conference on Thursday and accused Microsoft of fraud. Vance said, “If you do the math, for every worker that Microsoft laid off, they replaced that worker with one and a half foreign indentured servants.” The administration’s move comes amid a broader crackdown on the H-1B visa programme, which Trump supporters have long accused of undercutting American workers and being vulnerable to abuse. H-1B visas are meant for high-skilled jobs that are difficult to fill with American workers. Technology companies are among the biggest users of the programme, with nearly three-quarters of approvals going to workers from India, according to AP. Microsoft had not immediately responded to AP’s request for comment. The announcement comes a day after the administration proposed a $70,000 fee for international students seeking work authorisation through the Optional Practical Training programme.
