Mumbai Police have filed an FIR against actor Imran Khan over his participation in a protest organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday. Police detained the actor during the demonstration, which was held in support of the ongoing protest in Delhi, and released him late that night. On Sunday, a case was registered against him under Sections 223 and 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). His partner, Lekha Washington, and cousin Jain were also present at the protest. Case registered under five BNS sections Mumbai Police said on Sunday that the FIR registered against Imran Khan invokes Sections 223 (disobedience of an order), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 189(3) and 189(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police personnel themselves are the complainants in the case. According to the police, more than 400 people were detained across Mumbai during Saturday’s protest. Actor detained during protest After being detained during the protest on Saturday, Imran Khan shared a photograph of himself from inside the police van on social media. He wrote, “Looks like I am going for a drive.” In a video filmed inside the van, when his cousin Jain asked him whether he had ever been to jail, Imran said that, judging by the current situation, it seemed there was a chance he might. Speaking to the media, Imran said he had been picked up from the street and put into the van without any reason. Claim of walking home after release After being released from custody, Lekha Washington shared a video on Instagram, claiming that the police did not allow her to arrange a car or cab after her release. Lekha said her mobile phone had also been taken away, after which she, Imran and Jain set off for home on foot. Imran Khan said that before their release, he and the others had been driven around in a police van for nearly two hours. “I am not part of any organisation; I came as an ordinary citizen” During the protest at August Kranti Maidan, Imran Khan told the media that he had no personal demand and was not representing any organisation. He clarified that he had not come to speak as a representative, but had arrived to support the people as an ordinary citizen.
