India has achieved a major milestone in its green energy transition. Adani Group’s renewable energy company, Adani Green Energy Limited, has commissioned a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a total capacity of 3.37 GWh at Khawda on the Kutch border. This is the world’s largest battery storage project at a single location outside China. The batteries can store electricity generated from solar and wind energy and supply it to cities whenever needed. Built in a record 10 months, the system can provide round-the-clock electricity to cities the size of Goa, Indore or Chandigarh, or power around 1 million homes. The storage capacity is also enough to run 12 million LED bulbs continuously for 10 hours. Khavda project bigger than Paris The Khavda project covers 538 sq km, making it five times larger than the city of Paris. The world’s largest 30-gigawatt renewable energy plant is being developed here, of which 9.9 gigawatts are already operational. Why China is ahead China leads the world in renewable energy storage. The largest battery projects are located in the Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang regions, including the Chagan Hada project with a capacity of 4,000 megawatt-hours. These batteries can operate continuously even in temperatures as low as minus 35C. Learn about BESS Major BESS projects in India 1. Adani Green – Khawda BESS, Gujarat Capacity: 3.37 GWh 2.
