US President Donald Trump turned 80 on June 16. He is the second US president to reach the age of 80 while serving in office. Before him, former President Joe Biden celebrated his 80th birthday in November 2022. Although Trump is now among the world’s oldest serving leaders, he is not the oldest head of state currently in office. Older than 91% of world leaders According to a report by the Pew Research Centre, 16 national leaders among the 186 United Nations member countries are older than Trump. The report states that Trump is older than about 91% of the world’s national leaders. The average age of national leaders worldwide is 63. He is 93 years old and has been in power since 1982. The second oldest is Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who is 90 years old and has ruled Saudi Arabia since 2015. African countries have the oldest leaders The report found that many of the world’s oldest leaders are from African countries. This means political rights and democratic freedoms are considered limited in those countries. Nearly half of the 16 leaders older than Trump are also in countries placed in the same category. The findings have renewed debate over whether long periods in power can affect democratic accountability and political freedoms.
