Ranveer Singh, who was embroiled in a legal dispute for calling the deity shown in the film Kantara a ‘Bhoot’ (ghost), has received relief from the Karnataka High Court. In today’s hearing, the court accepted the actor’s apology, though it stipulated that the actor must visit the Chamundeshwari Temple and apologise within 4 weeks. On April 25, Ranveer Singh included an apology in his affidavit. At that time, the court sought time to consider it, while the complainant stated that the affidavit could not be considered a proper apology. According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the court verbally accepted Ranveer’s apology and spoke of quashing the case. On the other hand, the court put a condition before the actor that he should visit the temple in Mysore and apologise. Actor had apologised even when the controversy arose Immediately after the controversy erupted in December 2025, Ranveer Singh apologised through his official social media account. He had written, My intention was to highlight Rishab’s brilliant performance in the film (Kantara). As an actor, I know how much effort goes into performing that particular scene the way he did, and for that, I have immense respect for him. I have always had deep respect for every culture, tradition, and faith of our country. If my words have hurt anyone’s feelings, I sincerely apologise. What is the whole controversy? Ranveer Singh was part of IFFI (International Film Festival of India) last year. On stage, the actor made fun of Goddess Chavundi (Chamunda) shown in the film Kantara. Ranveer Singh told the film’s director and actor Rishab Shetty, ‘Rishab, I saw it (Kantara) in the theater. That was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost enters your body. That performance, that one shot was outstanding.’ Another video of Ranveer Singh from the film festival has surfaced, in which he is seen mimicking Chavundi Devi in front of Rishab Shetty even after getting off the stage, although Rishab Shetty was continuously seen gesturing to stop him. After the video surfaced, the actor was heavily criticised, following which High Court lawyer Prashant Methal filed a complaint against Ranveer Singh at the High Ground Police Station in Bangalore. The complainant stated in the complaint that Ranveer Singh mocked the revered Guliga Daiva and presented them in a disrespectful and humorous manner, which hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, especially those associated with the Tulu community. Earlier, on December 2, 2025, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti had filed a complaint against Ranveer for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. They had also demanded an apology along with legal action.
