The market for wearable devices is growing rapidly. After smartwatches, smart rings, and smart bands, work is now underway on devices that can be implanted in the body. This button-sized device in the arm will be able to continuously monitor blood pressure, temperature, heart activity, and other health-related parameters. These devices can immediately detect any abnormality in the body. A personal AI system can send this information directly to the doctor if signs of a potential illness are detected. This is expected to facilitate early detection of diseases and make healthcare services more convenient. Currently, the wearable device market has exceeded a turnover of 4.2 lakh crore rupees. In the future, patients will not need to go to the hospital every time for disease diagnosis. Health-related data collected by wearable devices will reach the doctor in advance. This will allow doctors to monitor the patient’s condition remotely and advise on tests or treatment as needed. Interest in wearable devices has rapidly increased since the launch of the Fitbit tracker in 2009. Big tech companies like Apple, Samsung, and Google, along with venture capital firms, are also investing in this sector. According to Jitesh Ubrani, an analyst at technology research company IDC, the ultimate goal of wearable devices is to become part of the healthcare system. Competition among companies in this sector is also increasing. Smart ring company Oura has filed lawsuits against seven competitors, alleging patent infringement. The company has won three cases, while four cases are pending. Apple, which sells 8 million Apple Watches in a quarter, is also facing at least two patent cases. Companies are now increasing partnerships with hospitals and health service providers. Apple has partnered with health data company Epic Systems. Oura has allied with Dexcom, which makes continuous glucose monitors. In May, Google introduced Google Health, while Samsung acquired Zealth last year. According to Dr. Andrew Jagim of Mayo Clinic Health System, patient monitoring will be possible anywhere in the world and at any time with the help of wearable devices. Their use is also increasing as digital keys, in addition to health. A Mac can be automatically unlocked with an Apple Watch. In the future, gait, heart rate, and other biometrics can be used for system login, building entry, and approval of online purchases. Wearables are also becoming more proactive now. Instead of just tracking health and fitness data, they also tell you what to do, when and how to exercise, when to sleep, and how much to eat. According to industry analyst Ben Arnold, this is where more established brands like Apple and Google can gain an edge. These companies can derive information from other products within their ecosystem.
