West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said strict laws against love jihad and land jihad would be introduced within six months. The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would also be implemented in the state, along the lines of Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Adhikari made the remarks at an event in Kolkata marking the birth centenary of former Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) president Ashok Singhal. He said the BJP government would work according to the Constitution, but would not tolerate attacks on Indian culture, traditions and places of worship. Adhikari said the government would not allow any anti-national activity. He appealed to people to remain united and stay alert to forces that seek to divide them. He said the West Bengal government had formed a high-level committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, to draft the UCC. We will work according to the Constitution, but will not tolerate attacks on our culture The official said, “Rest assured that the government will work in accordance with the Constitution. But it will not allow any attack on Indian culture, Sanatan traditions, temples or monasteries.” They said the government would also not allow any attack on the heritage advanced by spiritual figures such as Swami Vivekananda and Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya. Speaking about the UCC, the Chief Minister said that West Bengal would follow Uttarakhand and Gujarat in implementing it. They said at the gathering, “Give us six months and we will also bring in strict laws against love jihad and land jihad.” UCC to include rules on marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption According to the government notification, the West Bengal UCC Bill aims to make civil laws uniform for all communities. It will cover matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. The BJP had included the UCC among its key electoral promises for the 2026 Assembly election. ₹1,000 crore for religious tourism circuit An official said the proposed religious tourism circuit would be completed in two years. A provision of ₹1,000 crore has been made for the project. He said at the gathering, “We need your suggestions and cooperation.” TMC government accused of hurting Hindu sentiments Attacking the previous TMC government, the official said there were several reasons for its downfall. He said the biggest reason was repeatedly hurting Hindu sentiments, organisations, deities and traditions. He said, “People tolerated all this for a long time and then sent the party packing.” Ram Janmabhoomi movement and alleged atrocities against Hindus mentioned The official recalled joining the Ram Janmabhoomi movement as a volunteer during his student years. He said that between 2021 and 2026, while serving as the Leader of the Opposition, he had staged protests against the alleged atrocities against Hindus in the state. 20,000 people to recite the Hanuman Chalisa The official also provided details of several upcoming programmes. He said that 20,000 people would recite the Hanuman Chalisa at Netaji Indoor Stadium in November. He said that 10 lakh people would take part in a collective recitation of the Bhagavad Gita on 29 December. The official said that his government had begun preparations for next year’s Gangasagar Mela. International-standard facilities would be provided at the fair.
