Pakistani security forces opened fire on protesters in Rawalakot, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), on Thursday. At least seven people were killed and 18 seriously injured. Children were among those killed. The United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) alleged that security forces attacked people holding peaceful protests with heavy machine guns and drones. Pakistani authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the incident. Protesters allegedly targeted at three locations According to the UKPNP, Pakistani security forces took action against ongoing sit-ins at the Matiyalmera Bus Terminal, Umar Farooq Chowk and other places in Rawalakot. The party alleged that the security forces not only opened fire on the protesters but also carried out drone strikes. Heavy machine guns and armoured vehicles were used during the operation. 4 major reasons behind the protests… 1. Dispute over 12 reserved Assembly seats The PoK Assembly has a total of 53 seats, of which 12 are reserved for people of Kashmiri origin living in Pakistan. Protesters allege that the Pakistani government uses these seats to interfere in PoK’s politics. They argue that local people are not represented through these seats. The dispute intensified after a June 7 ruling by the PoK Supreme Court. The court said the seats could not be abolished without a constitutional amendment. 2. Electricity and the Mangla Dam issue A large amount of electricity is generated by the Mangla Dam in PoK, but local residents allege that they have to pay high prices for it. Protesters want electricity generated by the dam to be supplied to local people at lower rates. 3. Inflation and shortage of flour People in PoK are struggling with inflation, high flour prices and the rising cost of other essential goods. Protesters are demanding subsidies on flour, along with electricity, to provide relief to ordinary households. 4. Withdrawal of Pakistani security forces Protesters are demanding the withdrawal of Pakistani Rangers and army personnel deployed to suppress the movement. They are also seeking the withdrawal of cases registered against Awami Action Committee leaders under anti-terrorism laws.
