It was November 27, 2020. News broke that Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal’s transport minister and one of Mamata Banerjee’s closest lieutenants, had resigned. The Assembly elections were barely five months away. Suvendu’s exit felt like the collapse of a major fortress. The party rushed into damage-control mode. Efforts began to pacify the “Lion of Nandigram.” On the cold night of December 1, four heavyweights gathered in a room in Kolkata. Rebel leader Suvendu Adhikari, Abhishek Banerjee, TMC MP Sougata Roy, and election strategist Prashant Kishore. Hours of intense discussions followed. The next morning, Roy announced, “Everything is fine. Suvendu is not going anywhere, he is with us.” It seemed the storm had passed. But only days later, a WhatsApp message from Suvendu triggered another political explosion. In a message to Sougata Roy, he wrote, “My hurt still remains. You imposed everything on me without resolving anything. I wanted to speak at the press conference, but you announced everything beforehand and took away my chance. It is no longer possible to continue together. Please forgive me.” Meanwhile, in Medinipur, posters of Mamata Banerjee were disappearing from Suvendu’s office walls, replaced by saffron colours. On December 17, he officially bid farewell to the TMC. The very next day, orders granting him Z-class security arrived from Delhi, a clear sign that Suvendu’s political destination had changed. Then came December 19, 2020. The Medinipur ground was packed with a sea of supporters. Union Home Minister Amit Shah draped the BJP scarf around Suvendu’s shoulders. The two waved party flags together. Suvendu bent down to touch Shah’s feet and formally became the BJP’s key face for its Bengal mission. From just 3 seats, the BJP rose to 77 seats in the 2021 election, and this time in 2026, it secured a full majority with 207 seats. Now, with Amit Shah arriving in Bengal as observer, Suvendu Adhikari could well be announced as the next Chief Minister. Here is the life of Suvendu Adhikari told through graphics…
