A minor dispute that began over playing loud DJ music during a Kanwar Yatra on Sunday night in the Sunsari district of Nepal has now escalated into a major communal tension. Initially, the matter was limited to an argument between two communities, but violence quickly spread, and police had to open fire to control the situation. So far, two people have died in this violence, while several have been injured. Following the incident, protests erupted across the entire Terai-Madhesh region. Tensions further escalated after another youth died in Siraha during the protests. Considering the situation, the administration has imposed a curfew in several districts, including Siraha and Dhanusha, until further notice. Argument turns into a clash Devotees were returning with water from the Kosi Barrage, and DJ and loudspeakers were also playing with them. During this, some people from the other community objected to the loud music. First, there was an argument between the two sides, then pushing and shoving began, and soon the matter turned into a violent clash. Initially, local police arrived at the scene and tried to calm both sides. But shortly thereafter, more people from both communities arrived at the scene. Many people had weapons like sticks, bamboo, stones, and spears in their hands. Following this, stone-pelting started from both sides. Even after aerial firing, the violence did not stop, police opened fire. In the stone-pelting, 8 policemen, including an inspector, were injured. As the situation deteriorated, additional teams from nearby police stations and the Armed Police Force (APF) were called. According to the police, an attempt was first made to control the crowd. A police officer also fired three shots in the air, but the violence did not stop. Following this, at around 10:45 PM, the police opened fire. Om Prakash Mehta died from a gunshot wound. Several other people were also injured by gunshots. Later, Jaiprakash Mehta also died during treatment, bringing the death toll in this incident to two.
