Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Professor and Congress Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur, Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. The university found him guilty of sexually harassing 11 female students. The dismissal has come into immediate effect. The action was taken based on the findings of an inquiry by the university’s Internal Committee (IC), which had recommended a major penalty against Bimol Akoijam. Complaint filed with the Vice-Chancellor Before Akoijam’s dismissal, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had sought a report from the JNU administration on the matter. The commission sought the report in September following allegations made by 11 female students. The students alleged that they had submitted a complaint against the professor to JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit in May 2026. The students alleged that no appropriate action was taken on their complaint at the time. Gupta had asked the university administration to submit a report within three days. He hails from Manipur and has long been a vocal advocate for social and human rights issues in the state. He entered active politics after the 2023 Manipur violence. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he contested the Inner Manipur seat on a Congress ticket and was elected an MP after defeating the BJP candidate by more than 1 lakh votes. In Parliament, he is known for his sharp and impactful speeches on restoring peace in Manipur, rehabilitating victims and protecting the rights of the Northeast.
